[Orbit: 3D Game Design] IK Animation (April 5th, 7:00 PM)

First time attending this event? Please sign-up in our short form over here:goo.gl/JwpJzx

Looking to step up your game development skills by diving into 3D? This mentorship group is for you! The 3D Game Design Orbit mentorship group can help provide you answers and resources to any questions you may have on a variety of popular 3D game engines, including Unity 3D.

This session, Taro Omiya will provide a tutorial on how to utilize Unity’s Inverse Kinematic (IK) animations. This technique is useful for using scripting to make a humanoid character’s limbs twist, turn, and move to a target point in a natural way.

The 3D Game Design Orbit group will meet on the 1st and 4th Thursday of the month at Tech Valley Game Space and will provide opportunities for participants to share information, discuss projects, ask questions and obtain guidance from experienced mentors.

About Orbit

Orbit is a community-driven mentorship program designed to provide greater opportunities for learning and collaboration at Tech Valley Game Space than ever before!

The goal of Orbit is to bring local game makers (and aspiring game makers!) together based around mutual interests, and provide a consistent environment for sustained skill development, personal growth, and community building.

In celebration of the start of 2018, we’d like to do a refresh with questions and suggestions from all of you! Bring in any suggestions, questions, or advice on how to make our group better. Also marking the new year is a quick re-branding of our mentorship group from Intermediate Game Design to 3D Game Design. Despite these changes, however, our mentors will continue to focus on using 3D game engines, and even programming.

The 3D Game Design Orbit group will meet on the 1st and 4th Thursday of the month at Tech Valley Game Space and will provide opportunities for participants to share information, discuss projects, ask questions and obtain guidance from experienced mentors.

Lesson Night: Build 3D Assets With Blender (December 16th, 2015)

Image and short film, “Caminandes” by Pablo Vazquez, Beorn Leonard and Francesco Siddi
Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported

Would you like to be able to create 3D games, assets, and even entire levels? And would you like to do it all free? Well, we can show you how to do precisely that with Blender!

Blender is a powerful, free and open-source 3D modeling tool. It is also quite versatile, allowing you to not only build assets for games but also make animations, bake textures, create graphic designs, and even add interactivity using Blender’s integrated game engine.

In this class we’ll go over an introduction to the Blender interface, including basic building and using modifiers. If we have time, we’ll also cover creating textures and materials. Questions are welcome, and we’ll have more in-depth video tutorials and project files you can edit freely.

You can download latest version of Blender (2.76) at Blender.org (if using Linux, get it from this site rather than the repository, which is often outdated).

If you decide to attend the class you will need to bring…

  • Laptop with Blender installed (available for Windows, Mac, & Linux)
  • A three button mouse

Optionally:

  • A number pad helps but is not needed.
  • Gimp, a free art program can help with texturing but is not needed.

As usual, please RSVP in the Facebook event or Meetup event.
